The full report utilizes data from Mars United’s Marilyn Ecommerce Insights Suite, which analyzes digital shelf and ecommerce performance to provide actionable search, sales, and shelf insights for all major retail ecommerce platforms.

The following article looks at noteworthy trends across 21 top-line product categories, which represent Amazon’s own classification system. (Note: The term “Trending” reflects the brands, items and keywords that experienced the most significant growth compared to the prior month.)

Cooler and insulated drinkware brand RTIC was among the most active brands in June, placing among the top 5 trending brands for sponsored search results in four different categories: Home & Kitchen; Kitchen & Dining; Patio, Lawn & Garden; and Sports & Outdoors.

Drilling down into the categories:

Arts, Crafts & Sewing: Iconic glue brand Elmer’s gained the No. 1 spot in both organic and sponsored search results for the month.

Automotive: Thanks to its assortment of windshield and window shades, auto accessories brand Magnelex ranked in the top 5 for both organic and sponsored search. Related keywords represented five of the 10 trending organic searches.

Baby: “Sunscreen” figured in five of the top 10 trending organic search keywords, helping Coppertone to a spot in the top five brands for both organic and sponsored search results.

Beauty & Personal Care: Organic search results in Beauty & Personal Care were dominated by suncare brands as summer weather arrived across the U.S. But only Sun Bum caught the seasonal keyword trends to also appear atop sponsored search, where general cosmetics brands were otherwise prominent.

Camera & Photo: Security needs for the house, car and nursery were top of mind among consumers, leading related brands Lensuge (auto) and Javicam (home) to rank highly in both organic and sponsored search growth.

Cell Phones & Accessories: “Father’s Day Gifts” were common search keywords leading up to the designated June 19 date. Otherwise, the hot trend of the month was the far more specific “lightning cable” for iPhones.

Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry: Hunts for dad gifts were prevalent here as well, although keywords related to summer dresses and other seasonal apparel for women were far more common. Appropriately, then, women’s apparel brands Blooming Jelly (in organic) and Cupshe (in sponsored) topped search results.

Computers & Accessories: Portable fan makers Koonie, Jisulife (JL) and Gaiatop all placed in the top five for both organic and sponsored search results as Amazon shoppers apparently looked to stay cool at their workstations.

Electronics: Fans were also among the most-searched items here, along with other accessories such as cables and screen extenders. Meanwhile, digital cameras, TVs, and music-playing devices were among the top-trending sales items.

Grocery & Gourmet Food: The home team had a decided advantage in organic search results, as 365 by Whole Foods Market, AmazonFresh, and Whole Foods topped the brand rankings. In sponsored search, Jiffy, Red Bull, and mushroom-based product maker Four Sigmatic led the way. And the reseller market was well-represented, with Moofin making the top five in sponsored search and Trader Joe’s Mexican Style Roasted Corn ranking as the top trending item by sales. (Aldi-owned Trader Joe’s does not authorize online resale, by the way.)

Health & Household: Insect repellent brand Off! trended highly in both organic and sponsored search in a month where the trending organic search keywords varied widely and weirdly: from “bug zappers” to “foot massagers,” “sex toys” to “Liquid IV.”

Home & Kitchen: The category was a go-to spot for parent shopping, with Father’s Day gift searches prominent here — while keywords related to the long-belated (May 12) Mother’s Day continued to trend. Teacher appreciation gifts were also a hot keyword. The aforementioned Jisulife and Koonie brands were featured prominently as portable fans proved to be a popular search as well.

Kitchen & Dining: Similarly, gifts for dad and mom figured heavily among trending keywords, which otherwise were dominated here by unique seasonal needs like “popsicle molds,” “ice cream makers” and “snow cone machines.”

Office Products: Hallmark and Elmer’s finished 1-2 in organic search and 2-and-4 in sponsored search growth as cards of various types, planners, calendars, and “school supplies” dominated trending search keywords. Label printer brand Dymo topped all sponsored search brands.

Patio, Lawn & Garden: Despite the fact that several mosquito-related keywords (“repellent,” ”traps,” “zappers,”) trended in both organic and sponsored search, Off! did not experience the growth here that it did elsewhere. Instead, rival Thermacell enjoyed significant growth in both organic and sponsored search results, along with pool parts manufacturer Bestway.

Pet Supplies: Comfort Zone, a maker of diffusers and other animal calming sprays, was the top trending brand for organic and sponsored search, a result that reflects keyword trends in both areas as the fireworks-laden July 4th holiday approached. And although always-needed pet food didn’t trend among keywords, Blue Buffalo and Sheba grew prominently in sponsored search results and three related brands — Top Shelf Dog, The Honest Kitchen and Blue Buffalo — had the three highest-trending items by sales.

Software: Small business/personal software suite provider Truly Office placed in the top five brands in organic and sponsored search, which is particularly noteworthy in a category with far more brand names among trending keywords than anywhere else: Terms identifying Microsoft, Adobe, Norton 360, H&R Block (tax software), Roblox, and Amazon itself were among trending searches.

Sports & Outdoors: Off! and Coleman were the two brands trending for both organic and sponsored search in June as consumers prepared for seasonal excursions to the beach and the woods by searching for “coolers,” “cooling towels,” “beach chairs,” “camping chairs” and “water shoes”; brand-specific searches for Owala water bottles were also common.

Tools & Home Improvement: Power tools organizer and power strip maker CCCEI featured well in organic and sponsored search while search trends were led by keywords around Father’s Day gifting. Mack’s was the leading brand in organic search, reflecting a surge in searches for “ear plugs” during the month.

Toys & Games: Aside from gaming title, Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, search trends were flush with items related to pools and water games, while related brands Sloosh and Swimways topped the growth brands for the month.

Video Games: Gaming titles dominated the search trends, but peripherals and accessories marketers topped the ranks of leading brands for the month in both search and sales.
